Sub-organizations
Grouping badges and people by school, department, or program — and what that hides from whom.
A sub-organization is a division inside your account — a college, department, program, or campus. It's how a large institution keeps one organization (one identity, one billing relationship, one verified domain) while letting separate teams work without tripping over each other.
Previously called departments
Renamed to sub-organization because the same structure is used for campuses, programs, and centres, not just academic departments.
Setting them up
- 1Create them under Settings → Sub-organizations.
- 2Assign members to one under Settings → Members.
- 3Assign a badge to one when you create it, or move it later from the badge detail page.
Who sees what
- Admins see everything, across every sub-organization.
- Issuers assigned to a sub-organization see only that sub-organization's badges and awards.
- Issuers not assigned to one see everything organization-wide.
- Badges not assigned to a sub-organization are organization-wide and visible to everybody.
Enforced in the database, not just the interface
Scoping is applied by row-level security at the data layer. An issuer scoped to one sub-organization cannot reach another's data through the API or by editing a URL — the rows are not returned to them at all.
Moving and copying badges
Admins can move a badge to a different sub-organization, or copy it into one, from the badge detail page. Copying is the usual choice for a shared template — say a house design each department issues its own version of. See Managing badges.
Every badge, award, and credential stays under your one organization identity. Recipients see your institution, not the internal division.
